چکیده

Sharp dips observed in the pulse profiles of three X-ray pulsars (GX 1+4, RX J0812.4−3114 and A 0535+26) have previously been suggested to arise from partial eclipses of the emission region by the accretion column occurring once each rotation period. We present pulse-phase spectroscopy from Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer satellite observations of GX 1+4 and RX J0812.4−3114 which for the first time confirms this interpretation. The dip phase corresponds to the closest approach of the column axis to the line of sight, and the additional optical depth for photons escaping from the column in this direction gives rise to both the decrease in flux and increase in the fitted optical depth measured at this phase. Analysis of the arrival time of individual dips in GX 1+4 provides the first measurement of azimuthal wandering of a neutron star accretion column. The column longitude varies stochastically with standard deviation 2–6◦ depending on the source luminosity. Measurements of the phase width of the dip both from mean pulse profiles and individual eclipses demonstrates that the dip width is proportional to the flux. The variation is consistent with that expected if the azimuthal extent of the accretion column depends only upon the Keplerian velocity at the inner disc radius, which varies as a consequence of the accretion rate Ṁ .

Discovery of X - ray pulsations in the Be / X - ray binary LS 992 / RX J 0812 . 4 – 3114

We report on the discovery of X-ray pulsations from the Be/X-ray system LS 992/RX J0812.4–3114 during an RXTE observation. From a timing analysis of the source we obtained a barycentric pulse period of 31.8851±0.0004 s. The pulse profile is highly structured and departs from a pure sinusoidal shape. It shows a sharp dip that may indicate absorption by the accretion flow. The energy spectrum fro...

Evidence for “Propeller” Effects In X-ray Pulsars GX 1+4 And GRO J1744-28

We present observational evidence for “propeller” effects in two X–ray pulsars, GX 1+4 and GRO J1744–28. Both sources were monitored regularly by the Rossi X–ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) throughout a decaying period in the X–ray brightness. Quite remarkably, strong X–ray pulsation became unmeasurable when total X–ray flux had dropped below a certain threshold. Such a phenomenon is a clear indicat...

Origin of the Soft Excess in X-ray Pulsars

The spectra of many X-ray pulsars show, in addition to a power law, a low-energy component that has often been modeled as a blackbody with kTBB ∼ 0.1 keV. However the physical origin of this soft excess has remained a mystery. We examine a sample of well-studied, bright X-ray pulsars, which have been observed using ROSAT, ASCA, Ginga, RXTE, BeppoSAX, Chandra, and XMM-Newton. In particular, we c...

Accretion Column Disruption in Gx 1+4

Daily observations of the binary X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 were made with the Rossi Xray Timing Explorer (RXTE ) satellite between 1997 May 16–20 as part of a four-month monitoring program. On May 17 the sharp dips normally observed in the lightcurve were all but absent, resulting in a pulse fraction fp ≈ 0.5 instead of the more typical value of ≈ 0.8 measured before and after. Also observed was a dr...
